Balboa Naval Medical Center Sterilization Processing Department

The Sterilization Processing Department (SPD) at Naval Medical Center San Diego provides medical and surgical equipment sterilization services in support of other hospital departments. Since NMCSD is an operating facility, the project must not inhibit the existing patient care, service, and hospital operation.

The SPD is undergoing an extensive renovation of its 11,300 SF, to reconfigure the receiving/decontamination, pre-sterile, sterile, offices, and support functions. The project is to be done in phases, with each section remaining operational throughout construction. The goal is to transform the SPD into an up-to-date facility supported by its design, operation, processes improvement, efficiency and medical equipment.

The scope of work includes the demolition and upgrades of interior walls, ceilings, doors, door frames, finishes, structural, HVAC, plumbing, fire alarm, fire sprinklers, electrical systems and removal and/or modifications to the DDC controls, as well as, HAZMAT material (mold in ductwork) removal and disposal. All existing plumbing fixtures are being demoed and replaced. The HVAC system for the SPD is being modified and partially upgraded to match the new department.
